How Science and Faith Work Together

Science and faith has often been put head to head throughout the years as opposing forces, but are they truly opposites or can they work together? Well, here at Faith Christian School we have a different outlook on how faith and science work when you put them side by side.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone refers to the war between science and God.  There are several reasons for why I do not like this statement.

1. Without science we lose a great way to study the Lord

First, if you make this statement, you are implying that you can’t do science if you believe in God.  It automatically excludes one of our greatest ways to learn about God.

2. Avoid thinking that science is anti-God

Second, as soon as you make this statement, you automatically imply that science is anti-God.  This is blatantly false.  Science is not anti-God; science is a tool that is used by people.  We wouldn’t say that hammers are anti-walls because a hammer in the wrong hands can be used to put holes in a wall.  A hammer in a destructive person’s hands can be a dangerous weapon, but it can be a marvelous constructive tool in the hands of a qualified builder.  Science is the same way.  Science is not anti-God; secular scientists are anti-God, and they try to use science to prove that God doesn’t exist.

3. Take a look back at Christians in Science

Lastly, there are many great Christian scientists.  They see that science is a powerful tool to help us understand God and the great world that God has blessed us with.  Scientists have used science to do great things; here are a few Christian scientists and their contributions to the world.

Robert Boyle (1627-1691) defined elements, compounds, and mixtures.  Created Boyle’s gas law

Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794) studied oxygen and figured out what water is made of

Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) One of the most prolific mathematicians in history

Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) Father of modern genetics

Charles Townes (1915-2015) Discovered a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy

Stephen Tunnicliff (Just kidding)

Our View

Here is my view on faith and science:

God created everything (Genesis chapter 1).  When God created the world, He also created the natural laws that science studies.  By learning about the world, I learn about God.  When an astronomer looks at the universe and discovers how vast it is; they learn that God is Huge and God is powerful.  When a biologist looks at the human body and sees how our organs all work together to give us life; the conclusion should be that God is a designer without a match.  Physicists look at the laws that govern how motion happens and learn that everything falls into order; the conclusion here is that God is ordered.  I could go on, but I think you get the point.  Science is not anti-God; the proper use of science shows us that there must be a God and tells us about how great that God is.
